Firewood is not pruning. You need torque, an 18–20″ bar, and a saw you can run without stopping every eight minutes to swap a battery — unless you only cut a few rounds a month.
What “for firewood” means
- Rounds 8–16″ across, not twigs
- Hours of cutting across a season
- Bar usually 18–20″
Best gas: Echo CS-590 Timber Wolf
Default pick for homeowners who process real wood. All-day cutting, no battery math, usually cheaper than a comparable dealer Stihl. You will mix fuel and file the chain. That is normal if you heat with wood.
Best gas alternative: Husqvarna 460 Rancher
60cc-class rancher: farm, storms, winter wood. Easy to find in stores. Same job as the Echo — pick on price, dealer, and how it feels in your hands.

Battery: only with spare packs
Husqvarna Power Axe 350i or Echo DCS-5000 56V can do firewood in short sessions. Plan on two batteries minimum. A winter of oak in two weekends → gas. A little every Saturday → battery is nicer.

Setup that matters more than the brand
- Sharpen often — a file every tank, not once a season
- Bar oil every fill
- Split on a stand; do not cut into dirt
- Chaps + helmet. Long days + fatigue = kickback
Bottom line
Most firewood cutters should buy mid-size gas (CS-590 or 460 Rancher). Use battery only if you already like the platform and own extra packs. A 14″ beginner saw will cut rounds; you will hate it by the third log.
